Ukerewe Development Association for the Disabled April 30, 2008 The Ukerewe Development Association for the Disabled is a community-based non-profit organization located in Mwanza , Tanzania, Africa . The organization is based on Ukerewe Island where it partners with 74 villages in the surrounding area. The mission of Ukerewe Development Association is to fund corrective surgeries for children who are physically disabled. For years, international doctors from around the globe have helped this organization by donating their time, flying to East Africa, and performing the surgeries at no cost. This, in short, significantly reduces the cost for an operation. The Ukerewe Development Association for the Disabled provides funding for the patient's accommodations, transportation, food, one week hospital stay post-surgery, rehabilitation and medications.
Below you will see the before and after pictures of the children that the Turner Foundation helped support. Ten corrective surgeries were per fo r med from December 12 th -14 th 2007. There were 7 corrective club foot surgeries, 2 cleft palate operations and 1 operation to re-connect joints that were displaced in a previous surgery. The success of these corrective surgeries was 90-98% depending on the individual child.
