Camerino (Cam) Sanchez,
Chief of Police/Santa Barbara Police Department

Chief Sanchez began his 26 th year in law enforcement this year and has been the Chief of Police for the City of Santa Barbara for over 5 years. His began his career with the Los Angeles Police Department where he worked an array of assignments before becoming the Chief of Police for the Cities of Hollister and San Rafael , before landing in Santa Barbara, and holds an Associates of Arts Degree from Rio Hondo College in Whittier, a Bachelor of Arts Degree from the University of Redlands and a Masters Degree in Human Resources Organization Development from the University of San Francisco . Cam has served as President of the California Police Chief's Association and currently serves on a variety of community boards. The Chief has designed and implemented programs such as, policing in the mental health field and is involved extensively with youth programs in the City of Santa Barbara . Chief Sanchez is also an adjunct faculty member at Santa Barbara City College, as well as Westmont College, and is developing a consulting firm, which will address leadership and human and organization development. His hobbies are golf and writing and he is currently writing a mystery novel and a leadership text book. Cam is married to Olivia and has 4 daughters.

Mr. Phil Grace, CEO, American Communications

Phil joined the American team as Chief Executive Officer in November of 2002 with responsibility for setting the company's overall direction and growth strategy. With more than 12 years of experience in key management roles with developing companies, Phil has a strong background in Sales & Marketing, Finance, and Strategic Partner relationship development. Prior to joining the American team, he spent more than 5 years as a Vice President at Somera Communications, where he started a new equipment sales division that grew to more than $100M in revenue in just over three years. Prior to Somera, Phil held positions as Vice President of Sales & Marketing and Director of Business Development for Investec and The Tynan Group.

Dr. Jonathan Hess, Business Consultant

Dr. Jonathan Hess has been a personal mentor and confidant to business executives since 1980. From 1999-2004, Jon served as a Chair with TEC, an international organization of CEO’s with over 6,000 members in the United States. In this capacity he worked with leaders of companies to increase their competitive advantage through intensive personal and professional development. Dr. Hess received his Ph.D. in Higher Education Administration from USC and served as Vice President and Dean of Students at Westmont College in Santa Barbara, CA, from 1979 to1989. While at Westmont he developed a unique four-year leadership development program for undergraduates. During that time he was also part of a team which included members of the United States Congress that founded the National Student Leadership Forum on Faith and Values in Washington, D.C. In the past three years Jon developed and trademarked the Burgess Strategic Fingerprint, a proprietary tool for assessing a company’s strategic focus. He is fluent in Spanish, and his work in personal development and strategic decision-making has provided for extensive travel throughout Latin America. Dr. Hess is married with three children ages 17, 23, and 26, and resides in Santa Barbara.

Mr. Steve Lord

Steve Lord has resided at The Village at Santa Barbara for the past three years.  He has helped in the leadership of the Wednesday evening Prayer & Sharing Group at the Village--and generally advises Turner Foundation Executive Director Dean Wilson on life at The Village.

Mr. Lord received his Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology at Chapman College, and his JD Law degree at the University of San Francisco.  He practiced law primarily at the People's Law Center in Santa Ana, California.  Mr. Lord's clients were primarily disadvantaged individuals--and thus gained a great empathy for those in need.  Mr. Lord's career was shortened by a prolonged illness, and he now enjoys his retirement at The Village.

Angel Valdez
Angel Valdez is a lifelong Santa Barbara resident with deep ties in the community.  Angel has a specific interest in the programs at The Village and in the West Side of Santa Barbara in general.  He has been involved in leadership of the Wednesday Sharing & Prayer group, Commission for Hope, and has also been active in assisting on the Village grounds and with special Foundation events.  As a part of the Commission for Hope, Angel has a specific interest in assisting prisoners who re-enter society.  Angel advises the Turner Foundation's Executive Director on a significant range of issues...from life on the West Side, to youth programs and the activities of the Commission for Hope.
