Vision for The Village at Santa Barbara
The Turner Foundation seeks to care for people by providing a safe, warm, and affordable home environment. By providing services on-site in a “village” setting, we can serve our residents in unique ways, develop a sense of community, and reduce the problems and tensions often associated with an affordable housing facility.
The Turner Foundation owns and operates "The Village at Santa Barbara" -- a 70-unit affordable housing complex on the west side of Santa Barbara. The Village offers a mix of units--studios, 1, 2, and 3 bedroom apartments.
Beginning in the fall of 2006, The Turner Foundation will unveil the Community Center at The Village. The Community Center will include activities, a learning center for children, a small outdoor play area, as well as a Resource Center to support the families of brain-injured and/or special needs individuals. In addition, The Turner Foundation has recently announced a partnership at The Village with the Santa Barbara Police Department. Inside the Community Center, the Santa Barbara Police Department will have a field office--allowing officers a place to work on the West Side of Santa Barbara.
The Village offers two laundry facilities, a pool and barbeque area, and will soon embark on a project to install a children's playground on the property. The Turner Foundation's Executive Director, Dean Wilson: "We are really excited about the vision for The Village. When he built the original Rose Garden Village in Riverside in the late 1950s, my grandfather, the Rev. Dr. Albert J. Turner, envisioned affordable housing that would bless the residents and the community as well. We think The Village at Santa Barbara will be a bright spot on the West Side for years to come."
